FoodCycle exists because every day, here in the UK, there are people going
hungry while perfectly good food is being thrown away and lots of people who
are lonely, could come together to form communities and make new friends.
We collect waste food from supermarkets, grocers and markets. We find spare
community kitchens and eating spaces. And we have over 3,000 trained
volunteers across the country who bring the two together. Every week they
collect more than a tonne of waste food, cook it into 850 tasty, nutritious
meals, and serve them to the people who really need them in big, joyful
community meals. Volunteers and guests sit down to eat together, meet
others and chat, building strong local communities across the country
As a Surplus Food Collection volunteer you’ll play a vital part in making our community meals happen, by ensuring that your weekly FoodCycle session has a regular donation of food.
You’ll pick up surplus food donations from the Bread and Butter Thing, a charity that collects surplus food. You will pick and choose approx 3 trays of fresh produce such as fruit, vegetables and food ingredients that can be turned into a 3 course vegetarian meal for approx 30 guests. You’ll then bring the surplus food back to your local Project venue and store it securely. Our Cook Volunteer will turn your food into a FREE delicious 3 course meal for any of who needs it and our Host Volunteers will serve it and chat with our guests.
You don’t need to have any previous experience – you just need to be passionate about reducing the amount of food that’s wasted in our society! You do need to sign up just like any of our volunteers (sign up here https://volunteer.foodcycle.org.uk/volunteer-sign-up) and then read and agree to FoodCycle's driving policy. After that, you can can sign up to any of our projects, and will be sent full details of where and how to collect the food. A shadowing collection can be arranged (you will collect with an experinced volunteer who can show you what to do), but please ask in advance for this so arrangements can be made.
Each project has a separate food collector, and these are our projects:
