Salford SU condemns the recent riots and acts of violence that are creating disruption across the UK, affecting everyone's daily lives. These actions, including vandalism, xenophobia, and anti-Muslim sentiments, have no place in our society.

We are particularly troubled by the hate and misguidance perpetuated on social media and in the media in general, and amplified by some people in power, which seeks to normalize racism. Ignorance and unfounded beliefs have incited these acts, endangering civilian safety and causing damage to public resources. Such criminal and violent disruptions have severe impacts on the mental health of minorities, who face increased anxiety and fear due to targeted hate and discrimination.

We call on the government to address the malicious spreading of misinformation on social media, and to reduce social media harms. We also call on government and all leaders to partner with affected groups to ensure that they are safe not just now, but into the future, through taking a proactive and preventative approach.

The Students' Union is proud to have a diverse range of student members, many of whom are currently spread across different areas of the UK for summer. We stand in solidarity with all our students, especially those who are Muslim or belong to ethnic minorities, who are directly affected by these events, no matter where they are.

We unequivocally condemn any acts that threaten the safety and future of our members. We urge everyone to stay safe and to reach out to us for support during these challenging times. Details of the support available are on our Instagram page and are also listed below:
