With university almost over for the summer (finally!), it’s time to start filling up those diaries with some much-needed fun filled activities!
Taking time out away from studies for our mental health and well-being is extremely important, and what better way to make the most of the longer days and sunshine (hopefully!).
In this article we will be focusing specifically on sensory sensitive activities and locations around Greater Manchester that you can enjoy with your friends or family this summer.
Trying to find things to do that are sensory friendly can be a real challenge, so I have put together my top 5 activities and locations around Greater Manchester just for you! So... let’s get started!
Who doesn’t love a trip to the cinema to see the latest movie!
Whether you love a scare or you’re more a chick flick kind of person there is always a movie for everyone.
Did you know that the Odeon Cinema at the Trafford Centre, The Printworks in Manchester, and Cineworld in Didsbury, all have sensory and autism friendly screenings on alternative Sundays every month!
With the house lights kept on, lower volume and no adverts or trailers, what better way to enjoy the latest movie! To find out more information about the upcoming autism friendly films this month, check out their website.
At Redbank House, part of Disabled Living they have two sensory rooms available to book!
The unique sensory rooms create a calming and interactive atmosphere, with colours flashing through the fibre-optic floor; and streams of green and blue twinkling through the bubble tubes what’s not to love!
Take a well-earned break from your assignments and dream away on the water beds to the sound of classical music (so dreamy!).
The multi-sensory rooms can be booked in 1-hour slots. The slots can be reserved permanently if you want to attend weekly or monthly!
The sessions cost £10 per person per session and can be booked for individuals or small groups of up to 5 people.
To book your session, you can call 0161 214 5959!
Green spaces have been proven to be fantastic for our mental health and well-being. So, what better way to take some time out from your studies.
With the beautiful Peel Park right on our doorstep, I highly recommend you take full advantage and go for a walk (or run!).
If you fancy getting a little more creative, you can follow our very own Salford Tree Trail! There are three routes which you can complete individually or altogether, which will take you to 25 trees across the University campus, Peel Park, David Lewis Playing Fields, and The Meadow.
Why not take a trip into Manchester and visit one of the amazing museums!!
Manchester museum is over 130 years old and is one of the largest museums in the UK!
From Egypt to Sudan, Archaeology, Earth Sciences and a Vivarium, it is one of my personal favourite places to visit and a fantastic day out.
If you need some time out on your visit to the museum, there is a quiet room on floor 1 next to the Egypt and Sudan gallery. It is a quieter space for anyone who needs time away from the galleries for rest, reflection or other reasons. It includes seating and mindful activities such as puzzles and books. Ear defenders are available in the room and at the reception desk.
My final recommended activity is to visit the Sealife Centre at the Trafford Centre!
With turtles to sharks, clownfish to starfish, and rays to octopus enjoy a day out like never before and explore over 2,000 creatures!!
If you have a hidden disability such as autism, you can request a green lanyard from the reception desk. If you use one of these it will let the team know you may require a little extra assistance during your visit.

I hope you find these 5 activities and locations helpful to help you navigate your perfect summer!
